Shiny items

When photographing shiny objects, like for example. metal, glass, high gloss photographic images (reproduction), their surface reflects the entire surroundings, including the photographer, camera and, of course, a light source. The latter is the most noticeable. Przykładem może tu być twarz człowieka noszącego okulary. Reflectors are reflected in the glasses at the time of photography. The photographer is forced to position the reflectors in this way, so that their reflection is not visible on the photographed object. It's easy to achieve, when it is flat, much harder, when it is a spatial arrangement, with broken or curved walls, and even when it's just a little wavy, like for example. surface of old oil paintings. Shooting detailed shiny objects requires special measures, such as a light tunnel.

He is known as. "spoon problem". When we photograph it from the concave side (drawing 46), the surrounding objects are reflected in its surface, when on the convex side - the background deforms its shape, reflecting in it, which results in an apparent reduction in its size.

In some cases, we have the ability to reduce the gloss of shiny objects, fuming them in the fumes of magnesium flash powder or coating them with a thin layer of petroleum jelly. This method eliminates unwanted reflections, however, it distorts the texture of objects, which is not advisable especially in the case of documentary and catalog photos. The correct result can only be obtained using a light tunnel.
